Joyce Akiko | Jennifer Dewalt | Freelancing

I came across Jennifer Dewalt’s website and blog today and found it so inspiring. Learning to code can be so overwhelming, especially when you feel like a beginner and you don’t feel like you have the skills to make anything substantial.

Looking at her project ideas for each day, I feel motivated to try a similar challenge. The projects are simple, but incorporate useful elements that can be applied to future projects.

“Sometimes I can’t believe how much I’ve learned and sometimes I can’t remember what life was like before I learned to code. This past year has been challenging, exhilarating, lonely, overwhelming, frustrating and awesome. It’s been the best year of my life.” Jennifer Dewalt

From Joyce Akiko on freelancing as a self-taught coder:

So how DO you know when you’re ready to take it to the next level?

There are a lot of differing opinions on the topic , mainly because there isn’t just one way to
really know.

Generally though you’ll want to be able to:
1. Build a couple projects and be able to show them off
2. Talk about decisions and reasons for making certain design or development choices
3. Look at someone else’s work and find areas that you’d be able to improve
4. Go on Stack Exchange or similar and answer more questions than you need to ask
